Quassem Soleimani was a general in the Iranian military. He was considered to have a very powerful influence on the Iranian government, leading to some dubbing him the equivalent of a Vice President.
Soleimani joined the Iranian military during the 1979 revolution. During the 1980-1988 Iran-Iraq war, he quickly grew power and rose to prominence until in 1998 when he was named the major general of the Quds Force. In 2007. the Quds Force was named a terrorist group by the U.S. By 2013, he was credited as being one of Iran's most important figure.
The General was viewed as a threat due to his intentions of taking over the Middle East. Although he played a role in fighting ISIS, he was responsible for the deaths of nearly 600 American troops via highly complex explosive devices. This alone made up almost 20% of all combat deaths in the Middle East. The explosive devices was also responsible for viciously injuring thousands more. Iran has made numerous acts of aggression, including the recent Embassy attack. According to numerous officials, Iran was conspiring to continue the aggression and seriously attack the United States. With Iran's military size and tactics, they're certainly a dangerous force to be cautious of. President Trump promptly ordered the air strike which struct Soleimani. Trump defended the move as an action that will prevent war, rather than cause war.
While anti-American Iranians are upset about his death, other Iranians celebrate his death as a victory for freedom and democracy. Soleimani has a history of treating his own people ruthlessly, including killing 1,500 protesters during his regime. Iranians took to twitter with the trending hashtag "#Iraniansdetestsoleimani" to warn Americans not to be fooled by the propraganda. His funeral witnessed hundreds mourners holding on to pictures of the general. However, people claim this is a staged event to fool the united states.
